From Protestant to Catholic: A Faith Journey of Growth and Understanding
A Personal Reflection by Carlos Bargeron

Introduction: A Journey of Deeper Faith
Faith is a journey, not a destination. I have always been a Christian, believing in Jesus Christ as my Savior. However, as I sought a deeper understanding of my faith, I found myself drawn toward Catholicism—a tradition that is not separate from Christianity but rather its original form.
Converting to Catholicism wasn’t about leaving Christianity, but about deepening my relationship with God in a way that felt more complete. Through prayer, study, and experience, I came to see Catholicism as the fullness of the Christian faith, deeply rooted in Scripture, history, and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Seeking Something Deeper
For much of my life, I identified as a Protestant Christian, as that was the tradition I grew up in. I was taught to love God, follow Jesus, and live by the Bible. However, over time, I started asking deeper questions:
• How do we know which interpretation of Christianity is correct?
• Why do different Christian denominations teach different things?
• What was the original Church that Jesus established?
These questions led me to explore the history of Christianity. Through reading, studying, and attending different church services, I found myself drawn to the Catholic Church, which has remained unchanged in its core teachings since the time of the apostles.
Why Catholicism?
As I explored Catholicism, I discovered that it was not just another denomination, but rather the original Christian Church founded by Jesus Himself. Here are a few things that deeply impacted my decision:
1. The Eucharist: The Real Presence of Christ
One of the most profound aspects of Catholicism is the belief in the Eucharist—that during Mass, the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. In Protestant churches, Communion is often symbolic, but Catholicism teaches that Jesus is physically present in the Eucharist, just as He promised in John 6:51-58.
2. A Church Built on Apostolic Tradition
I was amazed to learn that Catholicism is historically and biblically connected to the apostles. Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19), and through apostolic succession, the Catholic Church has preserved His teachings for over 2,000 years.
3. The Authority of the Church
One of my biggest struggles as a Protestant was the many conflicting interpretations of Scripture among different churches. Catholicism provided a historical and theological foundation that made sense—Scripture and Sacred Tradition together. It wasn’t about individual interpretation, but rather the Church preserving the teachings of Christ as He intended.
4. Worship That Feels Sacred
When I attended my first Catholic Mass, I felt something different. The reverence, the prayers, the sacredness of the liturgy—it all pointed toward something eternal. The Mass wasn’t about entertainment or personal preference; it was about worshiping God in the most ancient, meaningful way possible.
Overcoming Doubts and Challenges
Converting to Catholicism wasn’t easy. I had to unlearn certain misconceptions, challenge my own biases, and embrace new traditions. Some friends and family didn’t fully understand my decision, but I knew in my heart that this was where God was leading me.
I spent time studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, attending RCIA classes (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults), and praying for clarity. Over time, I realized that this path wasn’t about abandoning my faith but rediscovering its roots in the earliest teachings of Christianity.
Living My Faith Today
Now, as a Catholic, my faith feels stronger, my prayers more meaningful, and my connection to God deeper than ever. I have found peace in knowing that I am part of a Church that has stood the test of time, guided by the Holy Spirit and the teachings of Christ Himself.
Faith is a personal journey, and everyone’s path looks different. For me, Catholicism became not just a religion but a home—one built on the foundation of Christ.
Final Thoughts
If you’re on a similar journey, searching for something deeper, I encourage you to ask questions, explore, and pray for guidance. God meets us where we are, and sometimes, He leads us to places we never expected.

This post really resonated with me. I’ve found that exploring the early history of Christianity opened my eyes to so many aspects of the faith I hadn’t considered before. My own journey has involved a lot of questioning and even some unexpected shifts, but it’s been totally worth it. Thanks for sharing your story and inviting others into the conversation—it’s encouraging to see this kind of openness!
